privacy policy
This Privacy Policy describes the information Nod ("we", "our", "us") collects when you use the Nod app or this website, how that information is used, and the choices you have. Questions: privacy@gonod.app.
1. What Nod does
Nod helps people nearby share what they are open to — a coffee, a chat, a workout, an idea — and talk when both sides say yes.
To find people who are physically near you, Nod uses Bluetooth Low Energy on your device and your device’s location. Location is used to store where an active Nod was last set and to show you active Nods near that area — not to build a city-wide tracking profile.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you provide
- Account data — email, date of birth, display name, and optional profile photo, provided when you create an account.
- Messages — the content of chats you send after a mutual Nod.
- Nods — the text you share about what you are open to, and the location associated with that Nod while it is active, stored until you delete that Nod or delete your account.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Nearby presence data — Nod uses Bluetooth Low Energy advertising to help discover nearby devices running Nod. Anonymous Bluetooth identifiers map to your account for discovery while you have an active Nod.
- Location — when you use Nearby or create/update a Nod, Nod may use your device’s location (for example GPS or network-assisted location) to store the Nod’s last known coordinates and to match nearby Nods for viewers with Bluetooth enabled. We do not require “always” background tracking for this purpose.
- Device information — operating system version, app version, and a random device identifier used to maintain your session.
- Usage data — anonymous analytics such as page views and clicks on our website (via Google Analytics 4) and feature interactions in the app, used to improve the product. We do not sell this data.
- Session recordings — the Nod app uses Microsoft Clarity to record anonymised sessions (taps, scrolls, and screen transitions) so we can identify UX issues. Clarity automatically masks all text input content, including chat messages and your intent text, before data leaves your device. No readable message content or personal text is captured.
2.3 Information we do not collect
- Contacts from your address book
- Any biometric data
- Payment information (we have no paid features at this time)
3. How we use your information
- To provide the Nod service — showing nearby Nods and enabling chats after a mutual Nod
- To maintain your account and session
- To send you service notifications (e.g., Nod requests, messages)
- To improve the app through anonymous product analytics
- To comply with legal obligations
- To review abuse reports and enforce our Terms of Service, including safety and moderation (see section 6 of the Terms)
4. How we share your information
We do not sell your personal data. We may share information with:
- Service providers — infrastructure and analytics partners acting on our behalf (e.g., Supabase for database hosting, Google Analytics for website measurement, Microsoft Clarity for session replay). They process data only to provide their services to us.
- Other users — your display name and profile photo are visible to users you have mutually Nod'd with. Until then, nearby presence stays anonymous and does not reveal your name or account.
- Legal authorities — when required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
5. Data retention
- Chat messages are retained until you or the other person deletes them, or until either account is deleted.
- Nearby Bluetooth session data is retained only as needed for discovery while you use Nod; clearing an active Nod or deleting your account removes related session mapping.
- Nod location coordinates remain with an active Nod until you delete that Nod or your account (so others can still match nearby if you go offline).
- Account data is retained until you delete your account.
- When you delete your account, we remove your profile, Nods (including Nod location), connections, messages, photos, Bluetooth session mapping, and blocks. Abuse reports may be retained for safety, security, and legal purposes. After deletion those reports no longer point at a live profile.
6. Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@gonod.app. We will respond within 30 days.
You can also delete your account at any time from within the Nod app (Profile → Security → Delete Account). That permanently removes your account, profile, and related content as described in Data retention. Abuse reports may still be kept for safety and legal purposes.
7. Children
Nod is not intended for anyone under 17. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 17. By creating an account you confirm that you meet this age requirement. If you believe someone under 17 has provided us with data, please contact us at privacy@gonod.app and we will delete it promptly. See our Terms of Service for eligibility and safety rules.
8. Security
We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (TLS), hashed credentials, and access controls. No system is completely secure — please use a strong, unique password and keep your device software up to date.
9. Third-party links
The Nod app and website may contain links to third-party sites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. We will notify you of material changes via the app or email. Continued use of Nod after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
